The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

What does a man gain when he escapes the color line-and what does he lose when he leaves part of himself behind?

First published anonymously in 1912, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is James Weldon Johnson's powerful and groundbreaking novel of race, identity, ambition, and passing in America.

The story follows an unnamed biracial narrator born in the post-Reconstruction South and raised with talents, intelligence, and opportunity. As he moves through the worlds of education, music, labor, wealth, and prejudice, he becomes increasingly aware of the brutal realities of race in American life. Gifted as a musician and drawn to Black culture, he dreams of using his art to uplift his people. But after witnessing racial violence firsthand, he faces a devastating choice: live openly as a Black man in a society built to limit him, or pass as white and gain access to a life of safety, privilege, and success.

Told with remarkable restraint and psychological depth, Johnson's novel explores the emotional cost of racial passing and the painful compromises demanded by a divided nation. It is both an intimate personal narrative and a sharp social critique, revealing how identity can be shaped, hidden, denied, and mourned.

A landmark work of African American literature, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man remains strikingly modern in its examination of race, class, art, belonging, and self-invention. More than a century after its publication, it continues to challenge readers with one of American literature's most haunting questions: what is the price of becoming someone else?

This edition is ideal for readers of classic literature, African American history, social fiction, literary realism, and works that explore the complexities of identity and the American color line.

Thoughtfully prepared with a clean, readable interior and a professionally designed cover, this edition is made for modern readers, students, collectors, and anyone discovering James Weldon Johnson's essential novel for the first time.
