27pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with several drawings, including 2 full-page plates, salvaged from damaged issues of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Volume LIX, Nos. 1 - 3, November, 1899 - January, 1900. The prepublication appearance of the author's story that would be released in book form by The Century Company in 1900. Per an editorial note, the present story is rewritten from a shorter one of the same name published by the author in The Atlantic Monthly, 1867, (which we have as well). Housed in protective mylar report cover.
