Wholesale drug company McKesson & Robbins was founded as Olcott & McKesson in 1833 in New York City, becoming McKesson & Robbins in 1853; in 1938 the company became synonymous with corporate scandal when it was discovered that the then-owner was a two-time convicted felon using a phony name who had used the company in illegal operations and had cooked the books to inflate its supposed $87 million in assets; the scandal forced the SEC to impose reforms regarding corporate governing and auditing. Partly-printed ADS, 1p, 8½" X 18½", New York, NY, 1860 September 28. Very good. 3/4" mounting strip runs down left edge of blank verso. This ledger book leaf on lined stock features McKesson & Robbins elaborate letterhead ("Importers and Wholesale Dealers in Drugs, Chemicals, Paints, Dyes & c.") at the top and lithograved likeness of the company's headquarters at "Nos. 91 & 93 Fulton St. and 82 & 84 Ann St." at left. Issued to Joseph Hodgson of Columbia, Virginia, the handwritten portion consists of a lengthy list of products shipped "per Schooner" and including such items as Aqua Ammonia, Hive Syrup, Castor Oil, Leather Varnish, Meigs Breast Pumps, Richardsons Syringes, Dry White Lead pure, Pow'd Arsenic, Pow'd Cream Tartar and many others, with a column for quantity and another for cost, the grand total including insurance and shipping coming to $114.22. A fascinating inventory of what one might have found at a Civil War-era druggist's shop -- and an interesting artifact from a firm that 78 years later became enbroiled in one of the largest financial scandals of the 20th century.
