Single sheet 4.5 x 7 inches in black ink. George, The Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904) was the grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. He was the Commander in Chief of the Army, 1856-1895. ALS to Frank Holl (1845-1888), English painter who painted George's portrait, now part of the Royal Collection and one of Holl's major portraits. ALS on Gloucester House, Park Lane stationery, dated November 12th / 82: 'Dear Mr. Holl, I am too sorry to say, that I shall not be able to keep my engagement for a sitting tomorrow Monday morning. I have unfortunately a bad knee, and cannot stand, & as I have several important duties in prospect, I must try to get all right as soon as possible. I will ask Mildmay to let you know when I shall be able to come instead of tomorrow I remain, Yours very sincerely, George.' Sheet is gold-edged. The portrait by Holl of the Duke was completed in 1883.
