one leaf written on both sides to a Mrs. Snelling, about 180 words. Benjamin was an editor and publisher, "notorious for his sensational journalistic devices and vituperation, and was among those successfully sued for libel by Cooper" (Hart, Oxford Companion). He also had a reputation as a lady's man and this note provides some evidence of his charm: "Since I had the happiness to see Miss M at your house, I have given up any belief that a very beautiful woman must needs be silly; she seems to have as lively an appreciation of what is good and beautiful in the intellectual world, as if she had not been praised and flattered all her life for her personal charms of no ordinary character." Folded for mailing, an early collector has written at the top "Parke Benjamin, Poet, etc." A Very Good letter.
