Lella was a prominent Sicilian banker and politician who eventually became a Senator in the united Kingdom of Italy, in 1861. The present letter was written around the time of the first Italian War of Independence (1848-1849), when revolts against the Austrians broke out in Naples and Sicily, Lella's homeland. Difficulties and dangers of communication and travel during a time of war no doubt explain the time gap between the composition of the letter and its posting over two weeks later. "The one remaining means of communication between Napoli and Este is via French postal steamers …" A fascinating letter from a prominent politician during the turbulent years leading to the unification opf Italy.
