The letters and documents were exhibited at the State University of Iowa Library, Iowa City, November 3-December 8, 1956. The sketches of the individual items and the background material used to relate the document to other historial events of the time were written and organized by various members of the University Library Reference Staff. The exhibit covered Colonial Days, 1607-1774; American Revolution, 1775-1783; Beginnings of the Republic, 1784-1799; Wewstward Expansion, 1800-1811; War of 1812; A Young Nation, 1815-1860; Secession and Civil War, 1860-1865; Further Growth of the Nation, 1865-1899; and A World Power, 1900-1953.
