Autograph letter signed, one page. 18.1 x 11.0 cm. A brief but interesting political letter from the 8th Duke of Argyll, statesman, author and former Secretary of State for India, commenting upon the American tariff question during a period of intense debate concerning international trade and protectionism. Responding to an enquiry, Argyll declines to offer a detailed opinion, observing: "It requires a very intimate knowledge of the details of trade & external affairs which few, and I think not I, possess." Written shortly after the passage of the McKinley Tariff in the United States, the letter reflects contemporary British interest in American tariff policy and its wider economic implications. Folded as sent with light handling wear. Very good condition overall.
