About this Item

This first lieutenant was a signal officer with the Fourth Artillery and post commander at Fort Meyer, Virginia -- but in 1886 he served as an aide de camp to General C.F. Stone, Grand Marshal of the parade held on October 28, 1886 just prior to the dedication of New York's iconic Statue of Liberty. President Grover Cleveland headed the parade, a massive affair that began at Madison Square and wound down Fifth Avenue and Broadway to the tip of Manhattan, at which point Cleveland and dignitaries were ferried across the harbor to Bedloe's Island and the actual dedication. The parade drew crowds estimated between one million and several hundred thousand people. ANS, 1p, 5½" X 8¼", New York, NY, 1886 October 25. Very good. Top edge a bit chipped; mounting stains on verso and a couple of inoffensive bleed-throughs from long-ago tape at upper corners. On "Inauguration of the State of / 'Liberty Enlightening the World'" letterhead just a couple of days before the parade, Strong writes in his bold, attractive script: "The Grand Marshal requests you to report in person at Hd Qrs. No. 1 Broadway, Room 10, at 4 P.M. on the 26th inst." and signs off with rank "Bvt Capt, USA., / A.D.C." Strong himself marched in the parade behind the grand marshal along with other aides. A fine memento from this momentous event. Bookseller Inventory # 40377
