Item description from seller

In old ink, bold, "William Southgate please / accept in this way the / grateful acknowledgment / of his friend the / Bishop of Nebraska / July AD 1891." William Wright Southgate was born November 27, 1800, in Newport, Kentucky, the son of Richard Southgate and Ann Winston Hinde. He married Adaliza Keene of Lexington, KY, on November 7, 1823 and they had 13 children. He graduated from Transylvania University, Lexington, moved to Covington, Kentucky, and was admitted to the bar in 1821. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1827, 1832, and 1836, and was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1839), after which he returned to Covington. He was buried in the Southgate vault in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. Research identifies Richard Scannell, b. May 12, 1845, d. January 8, 1916, as an Irish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as bishop of the Diocese of Concordia, Kansas, 1887 -- 1891, and as Bishop of the Diocese of Omaha, Nebraska, 1891 -- 1916.
