Holograph note in ink. Approximately 13 x 20 cm. Two horizontal folds. Envelope present (minus stamp). Postmarked from Anderson, Ind. Brief note responds to someone in Anderson by telling the writer that he is no longer a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and that they should contact John G. Carlisle, presumable his successor as Representative. Hinton, born free in North Carolina, came with his family to Indiana in 1848. African Americans were not allowed to serve in Indiana regiments when the Civil War began. Hinton became a recruiter for the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments. Hinton was active in Prince Hall masons, Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Methodism and Republican politics in Indiana after the Civil War. He was the first African American to serve in the Indiana Liegislature when he was elected in 1880 to to represent Marion County (serving one term) in the Indiana House of Representatives. He also served as trustee of Wilberforce University.
