Brown ink written on the unlined side of light blue paper. 20 x 9 cm. Text: "Sir, Enclosed find Ten Dollars In New York money to finish my note of the tenth Inst. and I appologize for delay. I send my Regards, Salmon Brown. Salmon, son of John Brown, was born October 2, 1836 in Hudson, Ohio. Salmon would have been about 18 when he repaid this loan. We don't know what loan he was repaying or the name of the creditor. He was involved in fighting at Pottawatomie and elsewhere in Kansas in 1855 and 1856. but did not participate in his father's attempt to seize control of the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Salmon married Abbie C. Hinckley in September, 1858. He enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War but reportedly resigned his commission as an officer in New York's 96th Regiment because fellow officers worried that his presence in the regiment might cause Confederates to single out their regiment for special retribution. Salmon and his family relocated to the West Coast where he was a successful sheep farmer.
