About this Item

no adte, but after 1821. Autograph note signed in full by Samual Laing ((1780-1868). Single sheet 5 1/2" x 7 1/4, folded in half and written top half of recto only. Heading reads "Papers relating to the Pirate". The body of the note reads in part: "These papers relating to the capture of Gow the Pirate were shown to me by Mr. Erskine, then sheriff of Orkney, afterward to Lord ______ and were shown by him to Sir Walter Scott who had them in his possession the summer before publication of his novel The Pirate." it goes on to state that a quote attributed to Gow was used by Scott. Folded across the center and with light soiling to the upper portion. Samuel Laing, an Orkney native, wrote travel books about his journeys in Scotland, Scandinavia and Germany. John Gow, executed in 1725 at the age of 27, was known as The Orkney Pirate and was the model for Captain Cleveland in Scott's 1821 novel "The Pirate". Bookseller Inventory # X190
