A clean, crisp autograph on an official letter to newspaper man turned politician, Henry Bowen Anthony, a former Governor of Rhode Island who went on to represent his state in the US Senate, where he served twice as President pro tempore. Timothy Otis Howe (1816-1883) represented the state of Winsconsin in the US Senate, from 1861-1879, and during the Civil war years, was an abolitionist and supporter of the Fifteenth Amendment. He declined a nomination to the Supreme Court by Ulysses Grant, to protect his Senate seat, which was nonetheless, lost to a Democrat in 1877.
