About this Item

86 pages used, heavily corrected and rewritten throughout. Washington University in St. Louis spiral-bound notebook, 11 in. x 8.5 in. A typed sheet signed by Prince, which is mounted at the front, describes its history at considerable length: "Yüan Chên Notebook, St Louis, 1980-1981. It begins with some notes for projected Travels (in Jamaica and U.S.).I went on worrying at it until December 9th. The idea of Yüan Chên comes on Dec. 11th [when he began copying Waley's translations of Chinese poets].The pages written in biro must belong to a short visit to England over Christmas.the three lines at the top of the page.indicate the discovery of the metrical formula.after which the drafting became more confident". He continues for another two paragraphs, describing his working methods, and annotating the changes made in the manuscript. F.T. Prince (1912-2003) was the author of one of the most famous Second World War poems, " Soldiers Bathing". His "Yüan Chên Variations" were published in 1981. Bookseller Inventory # 29303
