Ava Tanner The City Planner

City Planners are people who care
about buses, sidewalks, trees, and our air
about bridges, houses, parks, and trains
about wind farms and pig farms and also bike lanes!

They’re people who care — but also people who see.
They see, then persevere to fix problems for you, me, and we.

Ava Tanner dreams of making her neighborhood more fun. More specifically, she dreams of turning a neglected, muddy edge of her city into a community park. But isn't park building a job for the adults? Can a kid really change her community? Of course she can, because Ava Tanner isn't just any kid... She's a City Planner!

Written in sing-song rhyming verse, Ava Tanner The City Planner introduces elementary audiences to some of the basic concepts (and the fundamentally hopeful spirit) of City Planning—both as a possible future career and as a calling for all engaged citizens. The text is ideal for reading aloud in a classroom setting, and includes a glossary and open-ended follow-up activity.
