Het rijke abdijarchief getuigt van de bouw en het onderhoud van verschillende opvallende instrumenten : het laatgotisch instrument, het renaissance-orgel en zijn verbouwingen tot barokorgel, het barokorgel uit de achttiende eeuw, de overgang van de klassieke periode naar de romantiek met de bouw van het monumentaal romantisch orgel tot het huidige orgel dat dateert uit het begin van de eenentwintigste eeuw. Gebaseerd op grondig archiefonderzoek en literatuur-studie beschrijft norbertijn Jozef Van Osta in dit driedelige werk de volledige orgelgeschiedenis van de abdij. De verschillende instrumenten worden gedetailleerd voorgesteld. Ook de orgel- bouwers krijgen ruime aandacht. Voorafgaand aan de barok- periode werkte een schare aan gerenommeerde orgelbouwers in Averbode : Willem Boets van Heyst, Anthonis Toers, Gielis Brebos, Martin Posselius, Jan Dillingen, Jan van Weert en Jan Dekens. Het barokorgel van Guillaume Robustelly vormt een hoogtepunt dat door de troebelen tijdens en na de Franse tijd te snel uit de abdij verdween. In de periode van de romantiek werd het kleine orgel van Arnold Graindorge vervangen door het massief instrument van Hippolyte Loret.
