En 1936, Victor Krebnitsky poursuit son rêve de révolution mondiale quand il découvre l'emprise stalinienne sur la guerre d'Espagne. Malgré lui, il participe à l'élimination d'un transfuge soviétique, mais il est trop tard pour quitter les rangs ; l'époque est au soupçon général. Tandis qu'à Moscou les fonctionnaires du NKVD se défenestrent pour échapper aux purges, Victor doit gagner Paris et honorer une effroyable mission visant son meilleur ami. En dépit des menaces qui pèsent sur sa propre famille, il refuse de commettre l'impensable. Condamné dès lors à une exécution officieuse, contraint à une éternelle fuite en avant, il ne peut plus compter que sur sa ruse et... sur une arme au pouvoir dévastateur : le document secret prouvant la trahison et le " grand mensonge " de Staline.
