Awakened: By Wolves and Black Cockatoos

“Awakened: By Wolves and Black Cockatoos” by Alfonso Capito is a riveting blend of crime thriller and spiritual awakening. Set against the picturesque yet turbulent landscapes of Assisi, Italy, and the harsh Australian outback, this novel invites readers on a profound journey of murder, mystery, and self-discovery.

The story opens with the gruesome murder of Bishop Degno in Assisi—a crime that shocks the world with its graphic brutality. Enter Alex Campbell, an Australian journalist specializing in crime, sent to investigate not only the murder but also its potential connection to an assassination plot against the Pope. What starts as a professional assignment quickly morphs into a deeply personal quest as Alex grapples with his own existential crises, unfulfilled desires, and a strained marriage.

Through his investigations, Alex encounters a series of enigmatic figures who challenge his worldview. From Aboriginal elders in Australia to Assisi’s complex locals, including religious skeptics and devout believers, Alex confronts themes of karma, forgiveness, and the dualities of faith. The novel masterfully intertwines Indigenous spiritual traditions, Catholic mysticism, and modern existential struggles to craft a narrative that is both gripping and thought-provoking.

As Alex pieces together the clues behind the murder, he uncovers secrets buried within the Church and himself. The book explores controversial topics like clergy abuse, moral hypocrisy, and the conflict between science and spirituality, all while presenting a compelling case for repentance and redemption. Visions of wolves and black cockatoos—symbolic and surreal—guide Alex through life-threatening situations, forcing him to reevaluate his beliefs and awaken to the deeper truths of life.

This is not just a crime novel; it is a transformative journey through the darkest and brightest corners of the human soul. Perfect for fans of Dan Brown’s high-stakes thrillers and Paulo Coelho’s spiritual explorations, “Awakened” bridges the gap between mystery and meaning. Whether you’re drawn to pulse-pounding intrigue or searching for a story that delves into life’s deeper questions, this book will leave you captivated and inspired.
