Highlighting the optimism and playful personality of the much-loved Cuban-born salsa singer, this affectionate biography describes the life of Celia Cruz and her fascination with Caribbean music. Unfortunately, the author often turns episodes in Cruz's life into lessons for young readers, and political references to Castro's regime may not mean much to the target audience, many of whom will have more fun reading about the singer's passion for shoes, dresses, and wigs. The easygoing text, sprinkled with colloquialisms and Cuban vernacular, and the color illustrations, brimming with Cuban sights and folk motifs, make this an appealing title. Isabel Schon
