BERLIN WALL – CHECKPOINT CHARLIE – CHRISTMAS 1963 – COLD WAR – ORIGINAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPH. Christmas at Checkpoint Charlie. A striking and exceptionally atmospheric vintage black-and-white press photograph depicting the heavily fortified crossing between East and West Berlin at Christmas in December 1963. An evocative night-time composition showing the almost deserted streets around Checkpoint Charlie, with the Zimmerstrasse street sign, barbed-wire-topped walls, border barriers, illuminated buildings, wet pavement and a solitary figure in the middle distance. The reverse retains the original English-language press caption, headed 'Photo 2 to Article No. 7086', which identifies the scene as 'Christmas at Checkpoint Charlie, foreigners' crossing point into the East sector' and describes a fir tree and candlelight greeting neighbours across the Wall. The original caption bears the copyright statement 'Copyright 1963 by DIENST AUS DEUTSCHLAND'. Of particular historical interest is the Shields Gazette newspaper archive stamp dated 17 December 1963, the very day on which East and West Berlin authorities concluded the first Christmas Pass Agreement, allowing West Berlin residents to visit relatives in East Berlin over Christmas and New Year for the first time since the construction of the Wall in August 1961. The photograph does not depict the agreement itself, and its precise exposure date is unconfirmed, but its Christmas setting and contemporary archive date place it within this especially poignant period in the history of divided Berlin. A particularly effective example of Cold War documentary photography, combining an atmospheric composition with an important historical setting and extensive original press documentation. From the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, South Shields, North East England, retaining the original 1963 caption, copyright statement, newspaper archive stamp and manuscript editorial annotations on the reverse. 18.3 × 13 cm. Good vintage condition, with minor surface marks, handling wear and light wear to the margins. A highly appealing original period press photograph of Checkpoint Charlie during the early years of the Berlin Wall. Stock reference: 004278.…
