Pubblicato nel 1917 presso Treves, le Bestie rimanda a un genere narrativo del tutto eccentrico: si tratta infatti di 68 brevi (o brevissimi) frammenti autobiografici frammisti a considerazioni morali, alla conclusione dei quali compare come inattesa e illuminante epifania una “bestia”, nella cui essenza si specchia (e in qualche modo si metamorfizza) l’autore stesso: tarli, serpenti, lumache, allodole. Una natura primitiva (anzi primordiale) che affiora in ricordi tesi, nostalgici e di straordinaria verit� espressiva. Il bestiario costituisce dunque un mero pretesto per abbandonarsi ai giochi della memoria, quasi che gli animali rappresentassero tante piccole, evocanti “madlene” da gustare una ad una. Un autore moderno, modernissimo, come ha gi� da tempo certificato la critica pi� accorta.

FEDERIGO TOZZI (Siena, 1883 – Roma, 1920). Poeta, drammaturgo e soprattutto narratore, per molti anni quasi misconosciuto (molte delle sue opere saranno pubblicate postume), oggi rivalutato come uno dei maggiori narratori italia del Novecento. Fra le sue opere ricordiamo, oltre ai tre romanzi pi� conosciuti – Con gli occhi chiusi (1919), Tre croci (1920), Il podere (1921) – anche alcuni romanzi brevi (Ricordi di un impiegato, 1920, e Gli egoisti, 1923) oltre a una nutrita raccolta di novelle.
