BIOMATERIALS IN ORTHODONTICS

This book provides a comprehensive overview of biomaterials used in orthodontics, tracing their evolution from early gold alloys to contemporary advanced materials. It explains fundamental material science concepts such as stress, strain, elasticity, microstructure, and corrosion, which govern the clinical performance of orthodontic appliances. The work systematically classifies orthodontic materials into metallic, ceramic, and polymeric groups, detailing commonly used materials including stainless steel, titanium, ceramics, elastomers, impression materials, gypsum products, soldering alloys, dental adhesives, cements, brackets, and archwires. Emphasis is placed on their composition, properties, manipulation, advantages, limitations, and clinical applications. Recent advances in impression materials, bonding systems, and esthetic appliances are highlighted. The literqatur also addresses biocompatibility, corrosion, allergic reactions, and safety concerns associated with orthodontic materials. Overall, it underscores the importance of understanding material properties to ensure effective, safe, and biologically compatible orthodontic treatment.
