Anatoli Kouznetsov avait douze ans lorsque l'armée allemande occupa Kiev en 1941. Il habitait un faubourg proche du ravin de Babi Yar, lieu où des dizaines de milliers de personnes ont été massacrées par les nazis. Lorsqu'il put s'aventurer dans le ravin, il ne trouva que des cendres et se jura de témoigner, un jour, de ce qu'il avait vu. Il consigna aussitôt ses souvenirs dans un cahier d'écolier et, durant vingt ans, l'augmenta de ses réflexions personnelles, en marge de l'histoire officielle qui taisait la vérité des massacres. Il y intégra des documents authentiques et des témoignages recueillis auprès des survivants, mena son enquête et composa un " roman-document " sur la souffrance que l'homme est capable d'infliger à l'homme, où s'entremêlent le fait historique, l'autobiographie et la réflexion sur les dictatures du XXe siècle.
Paru une première fois en 1966 en version censurée par le régime soviétique, le premier grand témoignage sur la Shoah à l'Est est publié aujourd'hui dans sa version intégrale.

About the Author
Anatoli Kouznetsov est né en 1929 et a grandi dans un faubourg de Kiev situé près du ravin de Babi Yar où eurent lieu les massacres de masse commis pas les nazis de 1941 à 1943. Il décida, au sortir de la guerre, de consigner par écrit tout ce qu'il avait vu. Il exerça tout d'abord divers métiers manuels, fut ouvrier sur le chantier de la centrale hydroélectrique de Bratsk, dont il fit le sujet de son premier roman Suite d'une légende, publié en 1957 dans le style du réalisme socialiste, qui lui valut la reconnaissance officielle. Mais son grand roman fut écrit à partir de ses souvenirs de Baby Yar et des enquêtes et réflexions qu'il mena durant vingt ans sur ce drame aux multiples résonnances. Il cacha les microfilms sur lui et demanda l'asile politique en Angleterre en 1969. Le livre connut un succès plus marqué en Angleterre qu'en France, lorsqu'il fut publié en 1970 dans sa version intégrale. Kouznetsov mourut en 1979 à Londres d'une crise cardiaque, ayant renoncé à écrire, à l'âge de 49 ans.
