PreS Large, bright pastel-colored illustrations reminiscent of Garth Williams' show a variety of young animals as they prepare to take gifts to a new-born doe. Baby possum's gift of laughter causes the baby doe to giggle so hard that she falls ``splat! on her face,'' and all are soon laughing. The book is filled with pretty spring niceties and pictures big enough for group storytelling, but the verbose story doesn't have enough action or plot development to hold its intended audience.
