The Back Page: a Collection of Stories from The American Hunter Magazine

This collection of essays from The Back Page column that appears monthly in The American Hunter magazine reflects Jack Douglas Mitchell's many years in the field and the experiences he shared with friends and dogs. He does not claim to be a great marksman or hunter, but has rubbed shoulders with many that were. However, his real forte in story telling is to get inside the ordinary man or boy next door and make them believable. The author is at his best when he relates the inner actions of his characters and their dogs. Yarns like "Every Dog Needs a Boy" or "The Dog Next Door" will reach into the hearts of all those who consider dogs as man's best friend. While most of those people who write in the gun and hunting books dwell on the great shots made afield, the author has a delightful way of expounding upon his misses. Many hunters will be able to identify with his story "The Four Worse Shots I Ever Made." The Back Page is full of the nostalgia that makes hunting such an enjoyable sport and is presented in an easy-to-read style that might produce a chuckle, a green or a tear.
