For nearly a century, the Balance Protocols have existed to maintain peace between three desperate civilizations: the Amaurau, the Gunera, and the human race. When the Amaurau disrupt a Gunera ceremony commemorating the centennial of the peace treaty, Protocol Officer Nick Severin must try to maintain civility - a task complicated by an assassination attempt on the Guneri emperor's life. With the balance facing collapse, intergalactic war seems all but certain.

Nick is hastily ordered to return to Gunera, the planet on which he'd been born into - and escaped from - a life of slavery. On the run from both Guneri agents and human conspirators, and aided by a bodyguard of questionable loyalty, Nick must elude his former masters and renegotiate the balance. With time quickly elapsing, Nick faces death at the hands of all three races. He holds humanity's only hope for survival - even as its enemies circle in for the kill.

A rich, multi-layered epic, Newmin's BALANCE OF FORTUNE is certain to appeal to fans of character-driven science fiction such as C.J. Cherryh and Robert Heinlein, and adventure tales like Star Wars. Newmin's lavish descriptions, authentic dialogue, and exciting plot twists make this a must-read adventure.
