Stéphane Miller travaille comme enquêteur pour une compagnie d'assurances.
Un jour, on l'envoie flairer sur la disparition de François Bertolini, célèbre
footballeur sur le déclin (34 ans) qui fait encore les beaux jours du club local.
Le goleador laisse derrière lui une femme, un enfant autiste. et surtout une
impressionnante prime d'assurances. Or, Miller a autrefois bien connu
Bertolini. Il part donc pour sa ville natale et sa banlieue, en compagnie de son
fils Freddy, un dingue de télé et de ciné. Et ce qu'ils vont découvrir n'est pas
joli-joli.
Mais ce qui fait la force singulière de ce récit, c'est le ton. Selon Jean-Pierre
Énard, " Villard se montre champion dans le genre balade de cafés tristes en
cinoches minables. Les rapports de Miller et de son gamin sonnent toujours
juste, et on se laisse prendre à l'atmosphère un peu poisseuse de ce polar. " À
l'évidence, Marc Villard s'est investi à titre personnel dans ce roman, ce qui
confère un caractère autobiographique masqué à cette intrigue. Ce livre est
aussi à lire comme la nostalgie des années d'enfance où l'on se rêve étoile des
verts terrains balisés de lignes blanches, avec le spleen des impers à la Bogart.
Marc VILLARD est né en 1947 à Versailles. Il est toujours resté fidèle à ses passions
de jeunesse : la musique rock, le jazz, le football, le cinéma, la banlieue
et les poètes beat américains. À ses débuts dans la fiction, il est marqué par des
auteurs comme Pierre Herbart, Nelson Algren, Horace McCoy, Richard
Brautigan et John Fante. Pour le cinéma et la télévision, il a donné naissance à
une dizaine de films, dont Neige de Juliet Berto et Jean-Henri Roger (primé au
Festival de Cannes en 1981). Marc Villard appartient à la vague du néo-polar
qui, dans les années 1980, a porté au sommet des auteurs tels Manchette,
Vautrin, Daeninckx ou Jonquet. Une tendance littéraire virulente, viscéralement
contestataire, au sein de laquelle les auteurs se sont chargés de politiser
le roman noir et d'en creuser les aspects sociaux.

1984 (" Série Noire " / Gallimard). Introuvable depuis plusieurs années, il
n'était jamais paru en édition courante. Il a été adapté (production franco-hongroise)
pour la télévision en 1987 par György Gat (avec Istvan Bubik, Patricia
Barzyk et Philippe Nicaud).
