Flesher, for Richard Royston at the Angel in Ivy Lane, 1655, London, 108 pp plus contents and publisher s list, early 19th century binding, 8 x 6 , 8vo. In fair condition. Ex-library of Colgate-Rochester Divinity School. Ex-Libris of F. Ridoutt, Portsmouth. Ridoutt published The Early History of Portsmouth and the Formation of Churches in that Town in 1888. Armorial bookplate of Francis E(�.?) Ticeland (?). Only hand signature of Cornelius Paine, Brighton on fly. There is a document of Paine s will avaible through the U.K s National Archives dated 21 February 1826. Paine had an extensive library and a bibliography was written on his collection in 1891. Light wear to extremities with toning and heavier wear to leather tips and spine. Loss at head of spine. Ex-library blind stamp on front board left edge. Some underlining on title page. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Free of known marginalia. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. A very scarce theological work by Henry Hammond (1605-1660) an English churchman, who supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. He was son to John Hammond (c. 1555-1617) the Royal physician to King James I. He has produced more than fifty separate works and is considered a diligent scholar. He was much influenced by Richard Hooker and Lancelot Andrewes. He was the first English scholar to compare manuscripts of the New Testament. FORN-SHELF-0461-BB-2409-HKREV15.
