With gift card laid in from Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Monahan. States "Merry Christmas" James Gideon Monahan wrote the state song of Wisconsin, "Wisconsin: Land of Beauty, the Badger State Song" in 1900. Monahan was also a US Congressman from WI, and was Editor of the Darlington Republican newspaper in that state, from 1885-1900, and the Darlington Republican Journal from 1900-03 and 1914-18. Green cloth black-stamped boards. Gilt titles with black-stamped decoration on spine. Corners bumped and frayed. Rubs and chips at spine. Spine break at pg. vi of preface with 1" tear on pp. vi-ix. Spine break at pg. 207 and hinge break at rear board. Bubbling on rear pastedown. 16 b/w full page illustrations plus frontispiece with tissue guard and decorated title page. Volume I only.
