Basic Bitch: Books of Poems

Basic Bitch is a collection of poems meant to lovingly parody — and secretly appreciate — the new wave of Instagrammable, quippy, overly simplistic poetry that somehow won our thirty-something hearts. Effie Spence turns the mundane into the maybe-profound, giving you bite-sized poems that are equal parts irony, honesty, and “wow… I’ve definitely posted that before.”

Each poem was written in about two minutes, which is exactly the point. This book is a practice in trusting the first thought, the messy instinct, the unpolished truth. It invites readers to laugh at themselves, question where they’re overdoing it, and wonder why earnest vulnerability became our favorite aesthetic.

Inside: a laugh, a joke, a sting of memory. Tiny poems trying to hold a world that can’t be held — and melting your brain just a little bit in the process. Enjoy these snippets of ordinariness and find something surprisingly real.

Share these words with a lover, your dog, the plant you killed because nature makes things look so easy, or a picture of your teenage self who thought life would be more glamorous by now.

Embrace the ridiculous. Embrace the real. Embrace yourself.
