Synopsis
Offered by Swienton (emergency medicine, U. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas) and Subbarao, an emergency medicine physician and public health specialist, this eight-hour course teaches health care, public health, allied health, and emergency medical services personnel, and medical first responders and receivers the principles and practice of disaster medicine and public health. The course takes an all-hazards approach to mass casualty management and population-based care and the management of disaster-related injuries and illnesses across a wide range of disasters, including human-caused events, explosions and traumatic events, natural disasters, and nuclear and radiologic, biologic, and chemical events, including information on causes, early detection and warning systems, acute hazards and effects, clinical implications, public health considerations, prevention and mitigation of future events, characteristic injuries, and other aspects. The course builds on the Core Disaster Life Support course and prepares learners for the Advanced Disaster Life Support course. This edition has updated and redesigned chapters on public, population, and mental health, and new and expanded topics such as situational awareness, workforce safety and readiness, disaster deployment, surge capacity management, mass casualty triage and management, crisis standards of care, and mass fatality management.
