Basic Solid State Chemistry

The first broad account offering a non-mathematical, unified treatment of solid state chemistry. Describes synthetic methods, X-ray diffraction, principles of inorganic crystal structures, crystal chemistry and bonding in solids; phase diagrams of 1, 2 and 3 component systems; the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of solids; three groups of industrially important inorganic solids--glass, cement, and refractories; and certain aspects of organic solid state chemistry, including the ``organic metal'' of new materials.

Solid state chemistry is a rapidly developing subject. In keeping with the pace of new ideas, this Second Edition provides the reader with an up-to-date account of essential topics and exciting new concepts.

Features:

* New chapter on Synthetic Methods, covering solid state, precursor, chemie douce, intercalation, gas phase and other methods.

* New and expanded coverage of fullerenes, solid solutions, superconductivity, ionic conductivity, diamond films, armphous silicon, electrochromic displays, solid oxide fuel cells.

* Many new examples, and increased number of student problems; worked answers available to course lecturers and tutors.

Basic Solid State Chemistry, Second Edition is suitable for students taking a first course in solid state chemistry.

Reviews of the First Edition:

"Professor West is to be congratulated on producing a text at the right level and with the right approach to render it an ideal course book for undergraduate studies in Solid State Chemistry and Materials Science." Acta Crystallographica, (1990), B46, 447

"This book is clearly produced with excellent diagrams and well labelled figures." Chemistry in Britain, March 1989
