Tsuneko Kumagai (January 28, 1893 - September 30, 1986) Japanese calligrapher, leading modern female Japanese Kana calligrapher. Born in Kyoto Prefecture. He is the grandson of Amae EMA and the son of Shotaro EMA (Professor at Kyoto Prefectural College of Medicine). In 1914, she married Koshiro Kumaki, the manager of Kyukyodo in Ginza, and moved to Tokyo. I started learning calligraphy around the age of 35, and it was because I started learning calligraphy as well as my children [citation needed]. After studying under Sakurai Kawakita in 1928 and Shibusune Onoe in 1930, he studied under Takakage Okayama in 1931. While learning kana letters, he studied the old calligraphy of the Heian period and opened up his own realm [citation needed]. In 1933, he won the Tonichi Daimai Prize for Tosa Diary. In 1951, he became a director of the Japan Calligraphy Art Institute. Since 1967, he has been a professor at Daito Bunka University and has been awarded the 5th Order of the Crown.
