Book #1 in the short-lived British series featuring private investigator Paul Harley. Orig. published by Doubleday, Page in 1921, this is the First Printing of the 1939 edition from Caxton House (First, thus). In 333 pages. With black cloth-covered boards stamped with bright red lettering & a bat design to front & spine, this small octavo is in VG+ condition: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages heavily tanned, commensurate with wartime paper quality, unmarked save for former owner's name & date to ffep. Corners mildly bumped & some light rubbing/white-ish smudge to front board. The DJ has a great cover image, but is downgraded to Poor because it is missing most of the lower half of the spine, with creasing & chipping to what's there; nicely held together in new clear mylar cover.
