Batavia

Batavia by Hendrik Conscience. This historical novel, translated from Flemish, is set in the Dutch East Indies during the early 17th century and centers on the fortress Jacatra (Batavia). Walter Peterson, a thoughtful young man torn between family duty and national service, accompanies his aging mother to Amsterdam before being drawn to a perilous voyage. Walter loves Adelaide Van den Broeck, daughter of Captain Van den Broeck, a formidable commander preparing to sail for India. When the Captain departs, partings, treachery, and a savage siege unfold as Dutch forces defend their fortress against a Javanese army allied with Bantam, under the Sultan. Through battles, heroic acts, and personal tests of loyalty, Walter rises from sergeant to lieutenant as the garrison battles famine, disease, and betrayal. The narrative intertwines romance, slavery, and imperial ambition, culminating in a dramatic relief by a Dutch fleet and the hopeful future of Walter and Adelaide. Walter is eventually promoted to captain, Adelaide becomes his wife, and Congo is freed.
