Nous sommes en 1921. A cette �poque, personne n'ose douter du bien-fond� du colonialisme, porteur de civilisation et de paix. Une voix pourtant s'�l�ve. Celle de Ren� Maran, auteur antillais (1887-1960), alors fonctionnaire au minist�re des Colonies, qui d�nonce, dans ce roman pr�c�d� d'une terrible pr�face, les abus de l'administration en Afrique-Equatoriale fran�aise et les m�faits de l'imp�rialisme. Ses propos d�clenchent un v�ritable scandale qui culminera avec le prix Goncourt qui lui sera tout de m�me d�cern� la m�me ann�e. Ren� Maran n'ose-t-il pas �crire :
"Si l'on pouvait savoir de quelle bassesse est faite la vie coloniale, on n'en parlerait plus. Elle avilit peu � peu. Rares sont, m�me parmi les fonctionnaires, les coloniaux qui cultivent leur esprit. Ils n'ont pas la force de r�sister � l'ambiance, � l'alcool... Ces exc�s et d'autres, ignobles, conduisent ceux qui y excellent � la veulerie la plus abjecte. Cette veulerie ne peut qu'inqui�ter de la part de ceux qui ont charge de repr�senter la France."

Ren� Maran est n� en 1887 � Fort-de-France en Martinique. Il est mort en 1960 � Paris. Publi� � de nombreuses reprises par Albin Michel, il a �t� sacr� Prix Goncourt en mai 1921 - ce qui fut un �v�nement car c'�tait le premier Prix Goncourt sur l'Afrique �crit par un noir.
