In one of the most famous and decisive naval battles in history, a British fleet under Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Spain on October 21, 1805, thereby ensuring the safety of Britain from invasion and the preservation of British supremacy at sea. While the allies lost a total of 22 ships the Royal Navy lost none. Departing from naval tactical orthodoxy, Nelson sailed his ships in two columns directly at the enemy s battle line flank, splitting its fleet into three, and trusting his better trained crews and faster heavier guns to achieve victory in the ensuing melee. Nelson himself died on board the Victory , having sustained bullet wounds to the shoulder and chest. Hailed as the nation s savior he was given a spectacular funeral in St. Paul s Cathedral, and numerous monuments and memorials were erected in his honour. Dodd was a marine painter and aquatint engraver, best known for his works on the French Revolutionary Wars.
