Beating Natural Disasters: From Ancient Survival to a Disaster-Proof Future (Engineering Evolutions)

Natural disasters can cause devastation, but great engineering minds have created ingenious technology to limit that damage and save lives.

This book explores the engineering evolution in dealing with natural disasters, from past to present. It looks at how people have used engineering to protect themselves from disasters in the past, and how modern engineering, including earthquake-proof buildings, high-tech flood barriers, and hurricane drones, is battling these events today.

Explore the science behind natural disasters, along with the story of how we have used engineering to combat those disasters, from designing homes that can withstand hurricanes to building seawalls to protect against tsunamis. From early civic planning to designing buildings that help people survive earthquakes, the evolution in engineering at each stage in human history reveals how modern engineering has often been inspired by past discoveries.

The book concludes by showing readers the many exciting careers available in engineering to protect against natural disasters and how they can become the engineering greats of the future.
