Beau Desert : The Marquess of Anglessey's Golf Course

120 pages. The Beau Desert Golf Course is located in Staffordshire, England and was designed by Herbert Fowler. It is a heathland course featuring gorse, heather, bracken and fern. The land has been held by the Paget family (the titled gentry behind the Anglesey title) since 1546. A Marquess is second in rank in the British peerage behind only a Duke and ahead of an Earl, Vicsount, or Baron. It was the Sixth Marquess (Charles Henry Alexander Paget) who was the driving force behind the creation of the golf course in 1911. The course (and estate) take their name from the latin Bellum Desertum: beautiful wild place. A difficult to find club history full of black and white photos and illustrations.
