Wanda is a first-generation American born in 1916 on a prodigious farm in Delaware. Third from the youngest in a family of eleven children, she is forced to work the farm at the expense of her freedom, her education, and her dreams. Wanda suffers physical, emotional, and verbal abuse beneath the brutal hand of her stoic, German father who calls her Schlecht Wanda, which means Bad Wanda. His cruel label marks her as guilty and immoral. Wanda fights to overthrow this yoke that threatens to crush her beneath its agonizing burden while also struggling to preserve the flame of her desires. This is the unbelievable, true story of Wanda’s battle to rise above her unwanted destiny by trying to create a beautiful life from the ashes of badness. Will Bad Wanda uncover beauty and forgiveness in the darkness all around her, and more importantly, within the depths of her own tainted heart? Will she be able to procure happiness and success? The answers could reveal what makes an extraordinary existence reachable. This heartbreakingly powerful novel celebrates the joyous laughter as well as the singeing pain of life, recognizing that both produce tears. It is a testament of when faith, family, and feistiness can be enough.
