Bebop Guitar - Basic Theory And Practice For Jazz Guitar In The Style Of Charlie Parker

Bebop Guitar: Basic Theory and Practice for Jazz Guitar in the Style of Charlie Parker is a guitar instruction and sheet music book with CD focused on translating jazz improvisation concepts into bebop language associated with jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker. Written by Joseph Weidlich, it is for guitarists interested in jazz phrasing, improvisation, and Parker's celebrated “Bird with Strings” sound.

The book explores how chromatic and rhythmic alterations can reshape basic improvisational ideas into characteristic bebop figures. It includes numerous musical examples, most in G major, allowing players to concentrate on melodic, chromatic, and rhythmic concepts without relying primarily on the flat keys frequently encountered in jazz. The material centers on practical examples rather than presenting bebop theory in isolation, connecting theoretical ideas directly with musical application on guitar.

By examining the relationship between basic jazz improvisation and bebop phrasing, the book provides material for understanding how chromatic movement and rhythmic alteration can influence melodic expression. Working through the examples can support focused practice, exploration of jazz vocabulary, and a closer appreciation of Parker-inspired phrasing on guitar. The written material and accompanying CD offer complementary resources for studying the concepts presented and exploring how these techniques function within bebop-style improvisation.

Designed around guitar study and the bebop language associated with Charlie Parker, this book and CD pack can serve as a resource for lessons, personal practice, and exploration of jazz performance concepts. Its combination of theory, practical musical examples, chromatic ideas, and rhythmic approaches provides a focused way to explore the distinctive language of bebop on guitar.
