"Beethoven" by Wilhelm von Lenz is an essential foundational work in the field of musicology and a profound exploration of the life and artistic evolution of Ludwig van Beethoven. Written by one of the composer's most dedicated nineteenth-century biographers, this study is historically significant for categorizing Beethoven's massive body of work into three distinct chronological periods-a framework that continues to influence how scholars and enthusiasts understand his creative development today.

Lenz combines biographical detail with keen musical analysis, tracing the transition from the classical roots of Beethoven's early compositions to the heroic, expansive middle period and the experimental, transcendent nature of his final masterpieces. The text offers deep insights into the cultural and intellectual landscape that shaped Beethoven's genius, highlighting his innovations in symphonic form, piano sonatas, and string quartets. Wilhelm von Lenz provides a passionate and scholarly perspective, celebrating Beethoven not just as a musician, but as a transformative figure in Western civilization. This work remains a vital resource for anyone seeking to understand the legacy of the man who redefined the boundaries of music.
