Authors Randy Schueller and Perry Romanowski re-emphasize the importance of providing introductory technical information to those who would like to improve their understanding of cosmetic science. The authors were frustrated with the lack of technical resources available for beginners in this industry. They believe that this lack of introductory material has a negative impact on the industry s ability to recruit and retain talented chemists.

Since the 1999 publication of the original Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry, thousands of new chemical raw materials and new formulations have been developed, countless new marketing concepts have been tested and hundreds (if not thousands) of new cosmetic regulations have been enacted.

Perry Romanowski has worked in the beauty industry for more than 15 years and is currently a senior project leader of Haircare Innovation at Alberto Culver. He holds a B.S. in chemistry and an M.S. in biochemistry from DePaul University. He is the co-author of the book Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry and co-editor of Conditioning Agents for Hair and Skin and Multifunctional Cosmetics. Perry has also written numerous articles about cosmetic chemistry and is a contributing author to such works as Harry s Cosmeticology, Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology, and The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics. Perry is an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and currently instructs the continuing education course called Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry.



Randy Schueller is director of global hair R&D for the Alberto Culver Company. A graduate of the University of Illinois with a B.S. in chemistry, Randy has been involved in cosmetic product development for more than 24 years. In addition to co-authoring Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry, he is a contributor to numerous publications including Conditioning Agents for Hair and Skin, Multifunctional Cosmetics, Harry s Cosmeticology, Handbook of Cosmetic Science and Technology and The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics. He also holds several haircare patents and is an active member of both the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and the National Association of Science Writers.
