Wisdom, as the proverb reminds us, begins with recognizing our need for God. The men and women whose prayers are represented in this book - some without formal education, some with immense depths of learning - have all pursued wisdom. And all of them pray. Missionary or writer, teacher or activist, scientist or poet, they teach us through the example of their prayers. C. S. Lewis, Mother Teresa, Oswald Chambers, Benjamin Franklin, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn are just a few whose prayers are included, giving the book lasting value. And the sequence of six chapters is designed to complement the natural process of learning - from prayers of thanksgiving to the Source of wisdom, to concluding prayers for vision and hope.
