Darkness becomes light, death becomes life. I wanted to die, more then what is imaginable, but that would be something I would wait for. Death I feel is a prize I would have to earn. For so many men it is simply given to them, but not I.
As darkness slowly became light, it became clear that it was florescent, and I was being dragged through a hospital hall by men in white lab coats. My head spun with the comprehension of the day before. I would sooner forget then try to remember that. I had hoped it were just a dream, but no such luck would I have. Her face is all I see. The last thing I saw before the blackout.
The room they had taken me to I guess, was an emergency room. Judging by what I could see through blurred eyesight anyway. My head was migraine bound, and my vision was like looking through the bottom of a beer bottle after I had a few more then a few. There was a distinct aroma of rotting death all around like you would find in the morgue. Maybe I was dead after all, and this in-fact was not the ER. No such luck.
An odd looking man in a white lab coat sporting some thick bottle glasses entered the room. He held a briefcase in one hand and a clipboard under his left arm. An eager looking smile ear to ear covered his middle-aged face. He put the briefcase down and opened it. He pulled out a small flashlight shinning it in my eye. What a jerk I thought, I just woke up and this punk shines a Goddamn flashlight in my eye.
"Tell me. What is your name?"
"John."
"John is it?"
"Yeah."
I guess that s all he wanted to know, cause he stopped paying attention to me and started to type away at a laptop he had sitting on his cross-legged lap. I rubbed my eyes at a futile attempt to rub the blur out of them, of course that didn t work. As hard as I tried, I couldn t really focus on a damn thing. I thought for sure they must have drugged me up something out of this world.
"What am I doing here?" I asked.
"I ll ask the questions Mr. John. Thank you." He replied.
"Paddock. It s John Paddock." He said nothing in reply and continued to type away. I breathed deeply my own frustration. Without taking his eyes from the monitor he asked me.
"Tell me what happened?"
"Depends."
"On what?"
"On what you want to know."
"I want to know what happened on the island Mr. John. John Paddock."
"It s Paddock, it s just Mr. Paddock."
"Tell me what happened Mr. Paddock." He said with a hiss.
"It s actually Officer Paddock."
"Lets make this as brief as possible Mr. Officer. Whatever your name is." He said with a hint of hostility. I could tell this might take awhile.
"I ll try to tell you as much as I can remember on these drugs you got me on."
"Drugs? Who said you are on drugs?"
"Well I assume "
"You assume? Assume what? That we drugged you with something?"
"Look I just figured I m in a hospital right? So you must have injected me with something cause I cant see straight for shit." He paused for a moment.
"Rightfully so, but wrong. What you are feeling will soon dissipate Mr. uh John." He cleared his throat.
"Now from the beginning."
"It was yesterday morning " He interrupted.
"Beginning with your name, please."
