Many of these were first presented at a workshop of European and American scholars on Women and War held at Harvard in 1982. The essays provide analysis of a variety of wartime discourses ranging from the semiotics of the division of labor in defense industries to women's poetry and fiction. War is defined throughout as a "gendering" activity, one that ritually marks the gender of all members of a society, whether or not they are combatants. The pieces, however varied, reinforce the conclusion that the deconstruction and reconstruction of gender was another battlefront of both wars.
