Description
A gripping tale of deception, ambition, revenge, and social power, Behind a Mask; or, A Woman’s Power reveals Louisa May Alcott at her darkest and most surprising.
Written under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard, this sensational novella follows Jean Muir, a seemingly modest governess who enters the wealthy Coventry household with secrets, skill, and a ruthless understanding of human weakness. Frail and deferential in appearance, Jean quickly begins to manipulate the family around her, using charm, sympathy, intelligence, and calculated vulnerability to bend others to her will.
Far removed from the domestic warmth of Little Women, Behind a Mask is a sharp and suspenseful work of psychological intrigue. First published in 1866, it exposes the fragility of class privilege, the performance of femininity, and the dangerous power available to those who have been underestimated.
About the Author
Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known for Little Women, one of the most beloved works of nineteenth-century American fiction. Raised in a family closely connected to the Transcendentalist movement, Alcott grew up among writers and reformers including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and her father, Bronson Alcott.
In addition to her famous domestic novels, Alcott wrote thrillers, gothic tales, and sensational fiction under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard. These works reveal a darker, more daring side of her talent, filled with intrigue, passion, disguise, and social critique. Behind a Mask; or, A Woman’s Power remains one of the best examples of this striking body of work.
