Belonging Before Behavior: Creating School-Wide Systems That Support Every Student (School Systems That Work)

Belonging Before Behavior offers a practical, research-informed approach to schoolwide behavior systems—one that moves beyond punishment, compliance, and short-term fixes.

Drawing on years of experience as a teacher, Dean of Students, and school leader, Christopher Luttrell, Ed.S., challenges the false choice between accountability and compassion. This book introduces a clear, trauma-informed framework that centers belonging as the foundation for growth while maintaining high expectations for behavior.

Designed for real schools with real constraints, Belonging Before Behavior helps educators and leaders:

• Build Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 systems that align beliefs, practices, and data

• Respond to behavior as a skill-building opportunity rather than a character flaw

• Strengthen prevention, de-escalation, and restorative responses

• Create consistent adult practices that support both students and staff

Grounded in the belief that belonging does not excuse behavior—it makes growth possible, this book provides actionable guidance, implementation tools, and reflective prompts for schools seeking lasting, systemic change.
