Ben Nicholson

Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A pioneer of abstract art in Britain, he first came to prominence with his famous 'white reliefs', but he also maintained a lifelong attachment to landscape and still-life forms and - in an astounding career of over 60 years - produced a remarkable range of carved reliefs, paintings, drawings and prints.

Norbert Lynton's subtle and sensitive study - the first full-length, comprehensive monograph on the artist's life and work - was originally published in 1993 in a large edition with many supplementary illustrations. It has remained a landmark edition since then, as it takes the reader on a journey through Nicholson's evolution as a painter and maturation as an artist across a series of fascinating phases.

Ben Nicholson came from a dynasty of artists, and left behind him a legacy of artistic breakthroughs, touching upon an almost scientific approach to painting. This volume signifies the definitive work on the painter and printer, introducing this extraordinary artist and character.

Norbert Lynton is a distinguished art historian, lecturer, teacher and critic. From 1975 to 1989 he was Professor of History of Art at the University of Sussex.
